چکیده

Intracavitary Brachytherapy is one of the most used methods for the treatment of the cervical-uterine cancer treatment, which is the main cause of cancer women death. This treatment consists in the insertion of low rate dose Cs sources into the patient. The most used system for the treatment dose planning is that of Manchester. This planning is based on sources, which are considered fixed during the treatment. However, the experience has shown that, during the treatment, the sources could be displaced from its initial position, changing the dose from that previously prescribed. For this reason, it is necessary to make measurements of the absorbed dose to the surrounding organs (mainly bladder and rectum). This paper presents the results of measuring the absorbed dose using home-made LiF:Mg,Cu,P+PTFE thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD). Measurements were carried out in-vivo, during 20 minutes at the beginning and at the end of the treatments, comparing with those measurements performed at the Manchester A point in a phantom human-like. Results showed that the absorbed dose to the critical organs changes significantly with the movement of the patient during the treatment.

Comparison of Absorbed Dose in Thyroid and Lens as Organs at Risk Between in vivo Dosimetry and 3-D Treatment Planning Calculation in Head and Neck Radiotherapy by Linac Beam

Introduction: Critical organs and structures may receive significant amounts of irradiation even if they are not the target of radiotherapy or located outside the treatment field. Although the sensitive thyroid gland and lens are not directly the targets of treatment, they can be affected by irradiation during the treatment of tumours in head and neck region. The purpose of thi...

Determination of absorbed dose of organs (thyroid, sternum, cervical vertebra) in thyroid cancer patients following radioiodine therapy

Introduction: In patients with thyroid carcinoma, radiation absorbed doses of the thyroid and surrounding tissues is important to weigh risk and benefit considerations. In nuclear medicine, the accuracy of absorbed dose of internally distributed radionuclides is estimated by different methods such as MIRD and direct method using TLD. The aim of this study is using T...

Verification of the Accuracy of the Delivered Dose in Brain Tumors by in Vivo Dosimetry Using Diode Detectors

Introduction: During radiotherapy, high accuracy in the dose delivery is required because there is a strong  relationship between the absorbed dose, local tumor control and particularly the normal tissue damage. In  many institutions, in vivo dosimetry using diodes is performed to check the actual dose delivered. In general,  the uncertainty in the dose delivered should fall within  ± 5% of the...

Dose Measurements of Parotid Glands and Spinal Cord in Conventional Treatment of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Using RANDO Phantom and Thermoluminescent Dosimeters

Introduction Radiotherapy is regarded as the first treatment of choice for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Despite the advantages of radiotherapy, patients may suffer from a wide range of side-effects due to the presence of many sensitive normal tissues in these regions. If the absorbed dose exceeds the tolerance level in parotid glands and the spinal cord, myelopathy, Lhermitte's sign and xerostomia...

Determination of organ doses in radioiodine therapy using medical internal radiation dosimetry (MIRD) method

Background: Radioiodine therapy has proven to be an effective method in the treatment of patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma after thyroidectomy. The scope of this study is to describe a method to obtain the dose of organs using medical internal radiation dosimetry (MIRD) method. At the end, the results of MIRD calculations were compared with thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD...
